This leads to a fight between the two of them, and Lyla ends up kicking Tim out of the car, leaving him on the side of the road. However, the two of them make up after Tim shows up at her doorstep and tells her that he is going to college.
A wrench is thrown in Lyla's plans when it is revealed that her father, Buddy Garrity , spent all of the money in her college fund, meaning that Lyla won't be able to attend her dream school, Vanderbilt.

He holds a meeting with Tami Taylor , who lets Lyla know that there is still an option for her to go to Vanderbilt if she wants to. At the wedding, Lyla tells Tim all of this and apologizes for even debating going to Vanderbilt, but she is surprised when Tim tells her to go.
He expresses that he does not want to be the guy who holds her back. Even though he loves Lyla, he knows this is what is best for her. The two go their separate ways, as their lives are headed in different directions. Lyla is away at Vanderbilt, while Tim leaves college after only a month and returns home to live in Dillon. When Matt asks Tim if he missed Lyla, his answer is yes. Lyla returns for the funeral of Matt's father. The two don't speak to one another there, but share a long look.
Following this, Lyla shows up at the trailer that Tim has been living at, telling him that she's staying in town for a couple of days and that she heard Tim dropped out of school. Tim doesn't say much and she grows angry.
She is about to leave when Tim pulls her in for a passionate kiss, leading to the two of them sleeping together. Tim and Lyla spend the next few days together in his trailer, quickly falling back into old patterns.
